Affordable Prescription Drug Detox

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, a segment of the National Institutes of Health, an estimated 20% of Americans have used prescription drugs for reasons they were not prescribed. The most commonly abused prescription drugs are stimulants, opioids and depressants. Prescription drug detox is important to successfully stop using all prescription drugs.

Stimulants Defined

Stimulants are a group of drugs that produce feelings of euphoria and increased energy. They can be identified on the street by names such as black beauties, speed, uppers and the smart drug. These prescription drugs are known commercial as Adderall, Ritalin and Concerta, to name a few. Stimulants can be used successfully in medical treatment plans to increase mental alertness in certain instances, such as in sufferers of attention disorders. Misused, however, and stimulants can promote increased blood pressure, seizures, heart attacks, and strokes. Prescription drug detox is one of the best solutions to overcoming the worst of these side effects. Common side effects for this group of drugs can include:

  • Loss of motor coordination
  • Weight loss
  • Uncontrolled tremors
  • Aggressiveness
  • Paranoia

Opioids Defined

Opioids belong to a family of drugs that bind themselves to opioid receptors in the body and block pain messages to the brain. Sometimes utilized as cough suppressants and pain relievers, opioids are a great tool in effective pain management. Used recreationally as Cody, white stuff, monkey and smack, opioids produce sedation and muscle relaxation. Side effects can be:

  • Unconsciousness
  • Depressed or ceased breathing
  • Lowering of pulse rate
  • Death
  • confusion

Depressants Defined

Coined downers, roofies, yellow jackets and reds in the street community, depressants are prescription drugs that are commonly used in reducing anxiety. A group of depressants, Benzodiazepine, is successfully used to combat anxiety disorders and panic attacks. Abusers of these prescription drugs often administer them to others for the effect of causing memory loss and the lowering of inhibitions (date rape drugs). They also promote feelings of well being, increasing their attractiveness and propensity for abuse and addiction.

Identifying Prescription Drug Abuse

Prescription drugs are beneficial when used as prescribed and have effectively treated many conditions. However, having become the drug of choice for many teenagers and adults, prescription drugs have also played an increased role in deaths and drug overdose cases.

Prescription drug addiction can be indentified in numerous ways, a few of which are:

  • exhibition of prescription drug seeking behaviors
  • mood swings based on ability to get drugs or absence from drugs
  • crushing pills
  • change in sleep habits

Identifying addiction is the first step to recovery. The next is enrolling in a prescription drug detox program. A prescription drug detox program fundamentally decreases the physical effects caused by the withdrawal from prescription drugs.
