Detoxing from Methadone

What is Methadone?

Methadone is a type of synthetic opiate drug which is mainly used for relieving moderate to severe pain caused by cancer and other illnesses as well as for relieving the withdrawal symptoms of using real opioid’s such as morphine and heroin. Despite its uses in medicine and in morphine and heroin rehabilitation, however, methadone is still considered to be a dangerous drug, particularly when it is used illegally, as it has a high potential for abuse and addiction. Additionally, methadone abuse can cause numerous negative effects including nausea, vomiting, headaches, constipation, drowsiness, memory problems, difficulty urinating, chronic fatigue, seizures, insomnia, anorexia, blurred vision, impotence, a reduced heart rate and low blood pressure. The effects of methadone can also last anywhere from a couple of hours to several days, depending on the dose that was used.

Methadone Withdrawal

To overcome methadone addiction, one of the best solutions would be to undergo a methadone detox program. A methadone detox program is a kind of detoxification program which aims to help an individual to overcome his or her addiction to methadone and withdraw from the use of the drug safely and effectively.

Withdrawing from the use of methadone can be very difficult and the intensity of withdrawal symptoms can range from mild to severe; sometimes up to twice as severe as the withdrawal symptoms of heroin and morphine at equivalent doses. Methadone withdrawal symptoms are also more prolonged, lasting anywhere from several weeks to several months. Some of the withdrawal symptoms of methadone include light-headedness, tremors, tachycardia or a decreased heart rate, elevated blood pressure, depression, delirium, visual and auditory hallucinations, agitation, anxiety, panic disorder, delusions and paranoia.

Types of Methadone Detox

There are many methadone detox program types today which offer varying approaches to treating the addiction of an individual. Generally, however, most methadone detox programs combine the use of medications, detoxification methods and counseling. There are also some which offer approaches that can influence the functioning of the brain, effectively targeting and curbing the source of the craving for the drug.

Aside from helping an individual overcome his or her addiction to methadone, there are also some rehabilitation facilities and wellness centers which offer a methadone detox program that can help in naturally flushing the drug out of the body. This type of methadone detox program is usually recommended for those who want to not just get rid of their addiction to methadone but also get rid of the physical signs on their body which show that they have been addicted to methadone in the past.

When looking for a methadone detox program, there are several things that should be considered to make sure that the methadone detox program chosen would suit the needs and preferences of the individual. Some of the things that should be considered include the level or the degree of the addiction of the individual, the preferred approach or treatment by the individual or by his or her loved ones, the support that is available to the individual, and whether or not the individual wants to be admitted into a facility or be treated as an outpatient
